We need to secure our borders and enforce our laws in a compassionate and reasonable way.
Today I would like to announce my support for the emergency legislation being advanced by Senator Ted Cruz.
This legislation would:
Double the number of federal immigration judges, from around 375 to 750.
Authorize new temporary shelters, with the goal of keeping families together.
Mandate that illegal immigrant families must be kept together, except in cases of aggravated, criminal conduct or threat of harm to the children.
Provide for expedited processing and review of asylum cases, so that—within 14 days—those who meet the legal standards will be granted asylum, and those who do not will be immediately returned to their home countries.
This legislation reflects the compassion and value of human dignity that we as Americans should always strive to represent.
This however, is NOT a fix all to our long term problems and is only one piece of a complicated puzzle.
We must address the long term issues at our border and provide the funding for a border wall across our southern border immediately.
It is critical for our nation's security and the health and welfare of our citizens to construct a wall and fully secure our borders.
I call on Congress to act immediately and to take action now.
